Scottish Government publishes first Self Harm Strategy and Action Plan

We welcome the first Self Harm Strategy for Scotland as we continue to ensure that people with lived experience are involved in policy and practice.

Scottish Government’s first Self Harm Strategy and Action Plan (2023-2027) is now available.

To learn from the experiences of people affected by self-harm we held a series of Recovery Conversation Cafés. The cafés were commissioned by Penumbra and brought together a wide range of people. This included people with lived experience, family, friends, carers and organisations that provide support.

The Your Experience Counts report features key actions you tell us are needed to improve self-harm support in Scotland. Your views and ideas were fed back to the Scottish Government during the development of the new Self Harm Strategy.

We welcome this first dedicated Self Harm Strategy and Action Plan for Scotland. In particular the focus on the involvement of people with lived experience in the strategy design.

With Penumbra we were able to provide opportunities for people to be involved in the development of the strategy. People with lived experience, peer workers and other frontline practitioners.

By sharing their experiences of self-harm and recovery they have informed our understanding of self-harm. Their invaluable knowledge has outlined some of the different types of services and support that work best for people.
